Phylum Enchinodermata, class Enchinoidea ; sand dollars do not have arms, they use small spines on their bodies for moving. These creatures are in salt water shallows and sand bars buried beneath a thin layer of sand. Live sand dollars are a dull brownish color with a fine covering of hair on its body. The hair is the creature's spines. Sand dollars are slow moving scavengers, that feed on rotting organic material found in the shallows. The Octagon Sand Dollar is a less common species.
