Polished Turbo Semanticus (africa) Shells
Polished down from thick calcium outer layer. This is truly a beautiful shell
Family:
Turbinidae. This family features a thick turban-shaped shell with an
iridescent interior. The operculum or trap door is distinctive in that
it is thick and solid like a rock. There are several hundred known
species within the tropical seas. Most are vegetarian and feed on
algae.
Interesting Facts: The generic name for Turban shells is turbo, which is Latin for spinning top. If you order Escargot on an island, you will most likely be served the turban snail and not the typical land snail associated with this delicacy.
