A skilled artisan carefully uncovers the Ammonite fossils, and polishes them whilst leaving them upon the rock (called the matrix) in which they were discovered. The surrounding stone is variously highly polished, or is enhanced by gentle tapping with a chisel to give a speckling effect, or, simply chiselled to create a raw, rough texture, giving a fine counterpoint to the smoothness of the polished Ammonites within.
