Turban shells of the family Turbinidae have heavy shells and strong limy opercula by which most of the many species can be identified. Almost all turbans are tropical, shallow-water mollusks that feed exclusively on marine algae. Sexes are separate. The eggs are shed into the sea, and the larvae are free-swimming. This species is the sensational Astraea undosa, sometimes called the wavy turban. It is found in the waters of southern California to Baja California. The edges of the whorls have a heavy wavy cord.
